[comp.sys.amiga] NFS

vic@zen.co.uk (Victor Gavin) (04/14/89)

Hope someone out there can help me.

At our office we run Hewlett-Packard unix machines. We are currently
looking for some office system for doing word processing and desk-top
publishing.

The idea that I'm toying with is to get hold of a couple of Amigas.

We would like to connect the Amigas to our existing NFS network to
allow sharing of files and printers, but I can't find any advert'
which admits to there being such a product.

If someone can let me know if they've seen/heard of such a product (or
something similar), I'd be grateful.

Re: Victor Gavin's quest re: Amiga <=> NFS ...

On page 8 of the April 1989 UNIX REVIEW (Vol.7, No. 4) is the following:

" AMERISTAR INTERNET PACKAGE

Connect the Commodore-Amiga computer to TCP/IP based ethernet networks with
Ameristar's integrated hardware/software solution.

Package includes:

   - Standard/thin ethernet interface controller board.
   - Sun Microsystems compatible NFS (Network File System) client side
     implementation.
   - Internet file transfer program (FTP).
   - Telnet/rlogin remote terminal applications.

For more information, contact:

   Ameristar Technologies, Inc.

NFS is a trademark of Sun Microsystems.
Amiga is a trademark of Commodore Business Machines.

The above directly-quoted ad is not an endorsement or commercial message; you
need Ethernet on the Amiga, Ameristar provides it.

Ameristar has such an NFS client/telnet, etc implementation
for the Amiga. We advertised in Unix Review & Amazing Computing
this month. You can contact them at 516-698-0834.

The Ameristar Internet package includes a 10mbit/sec ethernet and
comes bundled with tcp/ip, NFS, rsh, and much more software. You
will be able to share files on that HP harddisk. The ethernet boards
are available and in stock from GfxBase, 1881 Ellwell Dr. Milpitas,Ca.

For dtp, you might look at Frame from Frame Technologies. I believe they
have a version that runs on HP equipment that talks X-Windows. You can
then all use your Amiga's displays as Frame displays if you also get
X11 from GfxBase.
I know this was a bit commercial.
