#N:uicsg:8300024:000:1502 uicsg!wombat Mar 19 17:38:00 1984 Several months back there was a discussion here about Phillips and what he'd been doing, whether he was still touring, etc., so, without further ado, from the March "Wireless," the programming guide for WEFT in Champaign- Urbana, IL: U. "Utah" Phillips, the self-designated "Golden Voice of the Great Southwest," will perform a farewell benefit for WEFT on Thursday, April 19th. Phillips is going to give up his yearly schedule of concerts in order to concentrate on his writing. According to his partner, Sheila Collins, this year's tour is limited to those places that have shown Utah a lot of love and support in the past. Phillips' concerts are a blend of folksy humor, traditional hobo and labor songs, mixed with provocative little pearls of wisdom. A large proportion of his music is made up of his own original compositions. Utah's deep and sonorous voice gives these songs a richness that can be appreciated by listeners beyond the hard-core "folksies." This concert may be the last opportunity for people in Champaign-Urbana to hear Phillips in person. The concert will take place at the McKinley Foundation, located at 809 South 5th Street, in Champaign. Tickets are $6 for non-WEFT members, $5 for WEFT members, and $6 at the door for everyone.
