[comp.sys.amiga] Internal Amiga Modem?

hutchinl@agnes.stolaf.edu (05/02/89)

Can anyone tell me if I can use an internal modem on my A2500, and if so
what kinds are best? I would appreciate any experiences anyone has had
with these, also how much are they. Email responses are fine, thanks.

I've been testing the SupraModem/zi internal 2400 baud modem for the A2x00,
and it seems to work well. The only problems I found were that sometimes
it crashed when dropping DTR and that the driver did not properly respond to
the "send break" command.. I reported these problems to Supra, so they might
be already fixed by now. Check with Supra if there is a more recent driver
for the modem. You can have up to 5 of these modems in the A2x00 and they
are accessed as modem0.device with different units, or as modemx.device
with x=0,1,2,... While only A-Talk III works right off the box with
multi-serial devices like these, Supra includes a program that will "patch"
other programs (it looks for the string "serial.device" in the binary and
substitutes "modem0.device" to it). I believe the price is the same as the
external one (about $170). A program is provided that will "simulate" the
modem lights. It can be run on workbench or can be attached to other screens
(like A-Talk III custom screen). In the latter case make sure that you exit
the lights simulation program before the comm program, otherwise fireworks
will be in order (this is documented BTW). As a Hayes-compatible modem,
the SupraModem does its job as all the other clones.
