Ok - I think I did a DUMB thing - I went and got a full-height drive before I checked to see if there was enough room in the case for one. It sure doesn't look like there's enough room in there - so: Anyone got any good suggestions or work-arounds ? Should I get an external case and PS and go from there ? Where can I get a decent case, and what kind of PS/cables will I need ? --mjr(); mjr@welch.jhu.edu

I have a Seagate 4096 full height hard disk drive installed internally in my 2000. I don't necessarily recommend this, but it seems to work great for me and it can save the expense and inconvience of putting the full height drive in a separate chasis. The nice thing about this is that there is nothing preventing using an external case later on if desired. Note especially that my hard disk drive is not fastened down, but sits snugly in and on rails in the 2000. Also note that my df0: floppy drive is external now and is somewhat exposed. And my last caveat is that television (with rabit ears) interference within several feet of my system got noticably worse after the hard drive was added; but for all I know, that's always the case with hard drives. When I bought my drive, I was under the impression that I would have to buy a seperate box for it. However, when I opened the 2000, I noticed that the internal floppy drive had a cable that was about 30 inches long (it's almost like CBM had this in mind). The internal floppy drive is mounted on a flat metal plate which is in turn mounted to the chasis by four screws. So,what I did was this: 1) unplug all power cords! 2) open 2000 case. 3) remove the 4 screws holding the metal plate under the floppy drive to the chasis. 4) unplug the internal floppy drive cable (this connector is probably keyed, but mark both sides just in case). 5) remove the plate and floppy drive. 6) remove one of the card slot plates on the back of the 2000. 7) run the floppy cable through the slot and reconnect the cable. 8) bend the card slot cover slightly and reinstall such that it does not pinch the floppy drive cable. 9) now, MY full height drive fits perfectly on rails in the computers disk drive area. This may not be true of all full height drives. 10) extra power cables are provided inside the 2000 case, use one. 11) connect controller/disk drive cables as per instructions for controller and disk drive. 12) now, my df0: floppy drive on the metal plate sits on edge on the left side of the computer, between the computer and a vertical desk partition. (df2: sits on it's edge on the right of the monitor, on top of the computer; great stereo separation for telling which drive is gronking :-). 13) replace 2000 cover. 14) don't ever move your system; if you do, disassemble or be extremely careful. That was the easy part. The hard part is preping and formating and startup-sequencing :-) I'm not a hardware type, and I took my time (about 40 minutes) doing the above. Could easily be done in 20 minutes. -- Jerry Kallaus {pyramid.arpa, ucbvax!sun!suncal}leadsv!kallaus (408)742-4569 "Funny, how just when you think life can't possibly get any worse, it suddenly does." - Douglas Adams
