To all piano owners and/or people knowing about pianos: I have decided to trade in the ol' Chickering and am looking for a new piano. The proliferation of brands overwhelms me, so I am looking for first-hand information (non-sales!). Specifically, I'm looking for an upright grand that is an excellent instrument; price is a secondary consideration (although not TOO secondary!). The two brands I've been most impressed with so far are the small company hand-made ones: Astin-Weight and Charles R. Walter. These both have good reputations (at least with my piano tuner) and are around the same price. The tuner also recommended Kawai, but I have yet to look at those. I would appreciate any advice/information on favorite brands and reasons why they're favorites. Some things I've heard and dislike are: plastic parts (Yamaha), overpricing based on name (Steinway), and UGLY cabinets (many brands). Please mail or post if of general interest - Thanks in advance!
