[comp.sys.amiga] Comments on the 2500UX

giguere@aries5.waterloo.edu (Eric Giguere) (05/11/89)

A friend of mine attended a closed demo of the 2500UX yesterday given by
some people from Commodore Canada. He's not an Amiga user but thought that
the Amiga Unix system might be pretty good. After the demo, though, he told
me that it was like "AIX, but worse". Apparently the demo wasn't too fantastic.
One thing that really disappointed him was that the Amiga Unix (Amix) was based
on AT&T's System V 3.2, whereas he's a BSD fan. This also means that it doesn't
have NFS support, which was a big minus. He also needs X windows, which he
knows is available for the Amiga, but when you add up all he'd want the cost
was about what he'd pay to get a Sun workstation at university research prices
anyhow. Since he's not into Amigas, having an Amiga on top of the Unix box
doesn't do him much good....

I'm curious to hear what other people who've used the UX system have to say.
One thing that my friend was told, though, was that C-A's next step was to
port System V 4.0 to the Amiga and run it on a 68030-based system (the Amiga
3000??).... he said that THAT might be worth it, but at this point the 2500UX
system simply isn't complete enough (it still hasn't been released officially,
at least in Canada) for him.
