[comp.sys.amiga] Disk woes: Happy ending. I think.

carpent@coltrane.SRC.Honeywell.COM (Todd Carpenter) (05/12/89)

Thanks everyone for all your help in getting my new ST506 up and kicking. I
finally managed it last night. The main things I had to do:

1) format dh0: *not* res0: (gee, that was easy!)

2) boot from floppy to do all this. Not the SCSI. Why? It seems the A2090a
looks for the very first drive out there. If it doesn't find a valid
AmigaDOS device there(which happens after PREP and before FORMAT), it up and
dies. So I was forsed to turn off the ST506 whilst booting, and then switch
it back on. But then it didn't autoconfigure. I (ahem) kind of forgot
about booting off of floppy, which overrides the A2090a autoboot. Which I
did, and things worked wonderfully. Oh, in addition, the floppy boot didn't
have ARP1.3, which may or may not have been a factor.

Oh, for those that collect such things:
 DiskPerf Results:
File create/delete: create 18 files/sec, delete 58 files/sec
Directory scan: 143 entries/sec
Seek/read test: 110 seek/reads per second
r/w speed: buf 512 bytes, rd 66156 byte/sec, wr 28225 byte/sec
r/w speed: buf 4096 bytes, rd 131072 byte/sec, wr 115864 byte/sec
r/w speed: buf 8192 bytes, rd 174762 byte/sec, wr 147686 byte/sec
r/w speed: buf 32768 bytes, rd 233016 byte/sec, wr 177724 byte/sec

r/w speed: buf 524288 bytes, rd 241051 byte/sec, wr 202950 byte/sec

This is on: B2000 + A2620 + A2090a on a Rodime Ro5090 ST506 drive, freshly
formatted FFS, with essentially no other jobs running.

Thanks again folks!!!

So, all I need now is a good disk validator. Something that will write
patterns to disk, read them, and verify by head; cylinder; offset. (Someone
dropped *what*? How far? Oh gawd. How much you want for it?)
