Nope I have had problems with DMCS Guru'ing when reading from my
synthesizer. My setup is extremely stable, ie ECE midi, Casio CZ230S,
A500. I don't have ANY problems with any software EXCEPT DMCS. Thus
I use other various programs to sequence, and then use DMCS to edit the
resulting score.

I agree Dr. T's is the best that I've seen so far. But it is still
lacking in some respects. I hope soon to see something for the amiga
that is written by a group of Amiga Programmers/MIDI'ist. I personally
think that something written by such a group would be absolutely awesome.
Comments Anyone?

Everybody does. The timing base is not stable enough in DMCS, and the
thing is written in 4 bitplane mode so the graphics steals clock
cycles from the CPU, which means you can't catch all the serial port
interrupts. This is the program that launched a thousand ST fanatics
(and the press, unfortunately) to cry "the Amiga can't do MIDI".

For a good time, have dmcs do a read from MIDI and wiggle your
synthesizer's modulation or pitch bend wheel. Instant crash.

Electronic Arts has continually said, since before version 1, that
DMCS is not meant to be a MIDI input device. That's why it has a
SoundScape port in it, so you can have SoundScape do all the timing
and MIDI work.

Whadja have in mind? If you're into Forth, you can use HMSL, by far
the most powerful and flexible of all the "sequencers" (although
that's not really a good term for what it is). You'll have to throw
away your idea of how to do music scoring, but you won't mind.
HMSL is not cheap, but how can you put a price on flexibility? :-)

For cheap stuff, Bill Barton's midi.library is a nice base to start
from -- it's modular, documented, stable, and free! Comes with a bunch
of low-level tools (with source) that you can use or build on.

For another, Pete Yadlowsky recently released MidiClock, which
provides a stable timebase on which to build MIDI applications. It's
written in Forth but doesn't look too hard to convert to C if you're
so inclined.

There's also a publicly available generic synth programmer/librarian
called 'glib' that getting wide use.

All this cheap stuff should be on People/Link, and maybe BIX. Some of
it has been posted to comp.binaries.amiga, so check your favorite
archive. HMSL is a commercial product.

Things are coming along. Maybe slowly, but that's where you can come
in. Make your own contribution, or give encouragement to these folks.
And spread the word about tools you find. Just like there are a lot
of text editors, we'll probably see a lot of publicly available MIDI
tools soon.

[Here line eat

You'll find the most recent version of glib (alpha v1.6) recently posted on
comp.sources.misc. It is the C source for Manx with an Amiga makefile.

Would some of you Amiga-midi users mind emailing me info on what software &
hardware you're using? Specifically, i'd like to be able to have a different
synth controller tell the Amiga to play (i'd like my Ibanez XMG midi guitar
controller to be able to play samples that i make with Perfect Sound &
AudioMaster).

Thanks in advance for any info. And i'll summarize & forward if anyone else
is interested.
