[comp.sys.amiga] Dead A500

rickfor@ncrcae.Columbia.NCR.COM (Rick Forrest) (05/24/89)

I know this has been discussed before, but i need some help.

A friend has a 500, bought 5 months ago from a dealer.

System

A500
No expansion ram, no external drives, no peripherals (like digiview or printer)
connected.

Symptoms

1. Power on.
2. Goes straight to green screen
3. CTL-A-A will light power light while held down, but power light goes out
when released, and system shows no sign of rebooting.
4. With system just sitting there, caps lock will light if pressed, if that
   means anything.
5. Power light never blinks during power up, or at any other time.

Comments

I saved a posting a couple of months ago about the startup diagnostic procedure
in which it states that green screen means bad CHIP ram, which i assume means
one of the 512k of chips on the motherboard.

One thing i can think of to do would be to reseat Agnus, just for fun.
My friend is bringing his Amiga this weekend (he lives 50 mi away). What i
need to know is any thing to look for on the inside (like agnus) or something
i could test with or without a scope, multimeter, etc. Test procedures not
involving a scope would be best, but i can get one if i have to.

If i could bring the darn thing up, i could run MemDiag on it. Is there a way
to make it come up anyway, even if the system finds a bad chip?

Thanks in advance.
