[comp.sys.amiga] LA World of Commodore Show

papa@pollux.usc.edu (Marco Papa) (05/23/89)

The LA World of Commodore Show was a reall bummer in my opinion for a number
of reasons.

First of all nothing really new was shown; the only interesting things were
Music-X, which is (as usual) 3-weeks away from release (i.e, 3-months away
or 3-years away, make your pick :-), and MINITEL, that does not run on an
Amiga.

The organization by the Hunter Group was terrible. Friday the show was
absolutely EMPTY: which Angelinos go to Downtown LA on Friday? NOBODY!!!

But the highlight (or more appropriately low-light) of the show was the cheap
sale held by Keith Masavage, Amiga Product Manager for Commodore U.S.A. sales
subsidiary right before dismantling CBM's booth.

Keith gave away at slashed prices software and hardware left from the User
Group promotions, including a bunch of cheap VCRs. Everybody knows that CBM
paid almost nothing for the User Group software (lots of companies ended up
losing money on that offer). The spectacle was sad and humiliating to say the
least. It portrayed an image of CBM sales and marketing that is simply abysmal.
Hey, guys, why don't you THINK before doing such things of the impact that
it can have on Commodore's image in the media. Some comments I overheard were
to the effect of "Would you ever see IBM or Apple do something like THIS?".

It was sad, really sad :-(

Let me be clear that I didn't imply that everybody at sales&market was
responsible for this screw-up. There are some very knowledgeable people
and some good friends in that dept. at CBM, BUT when the Manager is directly
involved in such things it clearly portrays the image of an entire
department. This is all more troublesome, considering that at least 3 members
of the press, with very visible badges, were at hand during the "raffle".

MNITEL NEW?!!! My grand mother has one for 3 years now... And I don't think
their is any server around here(U.S.A).
Put if you don't mind calling france, I could try to get you a minitel
emulator so you can hook you amiga to the minitel.
They have server wher you can buy commercial software by download!A was way
to gt what you want...
I think they have a connection with new york, so if you live theyr it wont
be too mutch problem.
Hope you where talking from the MINITEL from Alcatel!:-) Really nice portable
temrinal... Almost all newspaper, airport, retaurent , movie theater, store,
magazine...ETC has a server.
It funny to see phone number in magazine so you can call their 'server'
In the subway METRO you can go in without seen a had for a equivalent of a
900 number but on the minitel..
That replace the very few number of bbs.

Well it seem that they do a little better in europe. In the start of 1987 they
at alot of nice thing on the A2000 at the SICOB.
A harp demo using lazer been and projecting a harp image and a geant screen,
you just a to do like playing the harp and of a the stereo sound came from to
bgig speak and you could see your hand only add to the Harp pictures moving th
cord...
Also show a studio using the amiga, example of filght simulator using lazer
disk. And some video aniamtion taking from some computer TV show.
And all sort of 3d programs.
3 years ago... I even heard the word 2500 at the time, from someone how got
to decide for a 500 waiting for the 2500.
So the LA show was that bad:-(
Have you seen the SGI show last october? I think that was the best show EVER
for indroducing a new computer! They spend a couple million for it...
 That's only a 4 year compagnie.
