[comp.sys.amiga] Comgraph Show '89

dvb@elmgate.UUCP (David Blaszyk SOFT) (05/25/89)

Just wanted to let people know about the Comgraph show in Toronto, Canada
on May 17 -19. I was in attendance, supporting Kodak's version of Desktop
publishing, KEEPS and AP/PS 1.0, with high-speed printer support and color
printing.

All the major players in the DP computer market were in attendance,
SUN, Apple, HP, Apollo, Interleaf, IBM, Commodore, etc...

There was an abundance of hardware and software available, if you
are in the publishing business up in the Great white North, this was
the place to find some information.

Some quick notes from the Show:

SUN: was displaying there new line of workstations, the Sparcstation had
the Beta-Openwindows running, looked slick, but, it seems that
this version needs some fine tuning.

Commodore:

I could not help but saunter over to the Commodore booth, which included
a couple A2500s, A2000, and a couple PC-III-40(?), since the major
thrust of the show was DP, they were mainly showing off the many different
applications available. There were about 10 stations, two running
Professinal Page, one of the machines was hooked to the A2024(?), the
hi-Res monitor from CBM. It was displaying a complete page of text, with
no flicker, I believe the monitor needs the new Enhanced Chip Set, but I am
not sure. Looked really crisp, availability is still a non-issue, but
the sales rep. was equally as confused about the availability.

A couple local Toronto users, one Derek Grime, a local graphic artist
was demoing the use of Anakin Easyl as a tool to make slides/pictures
for presentation. Final output went to a QMS colorscript printer.

Also on display was a A2500, with beta-Unix, I was not sure if they just
had this there for a prototype or if it actually was a functioning model.

Finally in the third market, Desktop Video, a complete video system was
in place, with hooks to a A2500. The final output was a combination
of three different sources, one, the word Amiga circling a 3D model
of the Earth, second, a video camera directed at the people who walked by
that was projected into a sphere, and finally a music video in the
background with sound. This looked quite impressive and drew many
interested parties tothe booth.

SHARP: had on display there color scanners, Had one connected to a a2500
with the ASDG, the JX300, I had the sales rep demo the complete package
since I have yet to see one in action, the hardware and software worked
well together and produced an image of excellent quality. With the ASDG
controller software, you are able to scroll the screen size, resize/crop the
screen, control color selection, control the image size captured. Seemed
to be an excellent package for the price. The person at Sharp was a
Amiga enthusiast and really wanted to see this product sell, at present
he was impressed at the amount of interest in the use of color with the
Amiga.

Well that's the latest Amiga dope from up here in Toronto, no cheap
software given away here Marco(!?!), mostly high-end desktop video and
publishing. If anyone wants more info, or if CBM would like to lend us a
machine at work for those new Amiga fans from the show, just drop me a line.
NOTE: the software engineers at Kodak just loved the machine, even the
marketing guys were impressed, now all I have to do is convince them that
high-speed printing is avail. on the Amiga, can we say ethernet. I just
could not imagine my Amiga, hooked up to the 92 page/min printer here
at work or the color printer 18 page/min. would be quite a site. I will
just have to enjoy my a2000 at home.

Stay informed and enjoy Memorial day weekend,

This is the difference between Commodore Canada, and Commodore USA, and
Commodore GmBH. They are different companies selling the Amiga into their
individual countries, some have their act together, others don't.

It also seems to be the reason "President of CBM U.S.A." is revolving
door...

These opinions are my own and no one elses, but you knew that didn't you.
