[comp.sys.amiga] 68010 installation

phoenix@ms.uky.edu (R'ykandar Korra'ti) (05/24/89)

     I understand that there is a file on replacing one's 68000 with a 68010
microprocessor. I would like to do this, as I run a few applications (Digi-
Paint, for example) which benchmark noticeably faster with a 68010 in place.
The person who mentioned this file said that there was more to it than just
swapping chips (even though they're pin-compatible...?)
Anyway, since I have a 68010 already sitting around (along with several
other random chips... don't ask, it's a long story...) I thought I'd make
the swap.
Also; I'd like to be able to switch back and forth between the 68000 and
the 68010. How ugly a problem is this? Is there a simple dorky situation like
piggybacking the two chips and running switches between some of the pins?
     Thanks...
(Oh, Email would be fine for a reply - and if others have brought this up
already, sorry...)
                                                         - R'ykandar.

Re: replacing a 68000 with a 68010 in the Amiga ...

I wrote the original "file" which can be found in the MC68010 directory on
Fish Disk #18.

Among the things included was the DeciGEL program (for all those '010 pains
running poorly written software (if you don't get the pun, don't ask :-) )
written by Scott Turner.

The 68010 is a pin-pin replacement for the 68000, and MOST "new" software
doesn't require the use of DeciGEL anymore (in fact I've been running 68020
Amigas for over 2 1/2 years now and haven't used DeciGEL since 1986).

A lot of the info in the "file" pertains to opening up the A1000.

If you know how to open up your system and protect against static damage, just
go ahead and replace the chip.

I know of NO simple way to switch between the 68000 and 68010; you will have
either one or the other installed, period. For that reason, I have a buncha
Amigas, each with a different CPU for testing purposes, though the Amigas I
use daily all have 68020 processors.
