We have an EMI 8800 tape unit, and are having a lot of trouble with it.
It has been replaced once, but this only improved things slightly. The
main problem is that we regularly get hard tape errors, especially when
we're dumping. We use good quality tapes and the head gets cleaned
regularly. As you can imagine, this is very annoying. Has anyone out
there had similar experiences/know of a solution? We would be glad to
hear from you by mail.
The tape driver also seems pretty grotty (we're running 4.1Bsd):
- opening the door of the tape-unit while it's running crashes the system.
- setting the tape-unit to the wrong speed crashes the system
- the command `mt fsf' crashes the system
- etc.
Is this really the driver or is it us? If it is the driver are there fixes?
