[comp.sys.amiga] Hard Drive undelete

odin@ucscb.UCSC.EDU (Jon Granrose) (06/12/89)

I posted a similar request earlier but I think it got nuked by
the local server (we've been having problems with full devices).

Anyway, I accidently deleted an nroff source file on my A2000
which was fairly important. I tried using disksalv 1.4 with ASK but it
didn't work (I a couple problems with DiskSalv and my janus.device hard
drive but that's another story). I also tried Sectorama with no luck.
I didn't write anything to my disk after deleting the file but I am
not that familiar with Sectorama.

My request is this:

	1) Could someone tell me if there is a program to recover files
off of hard drives and what it is or why it cannot be done.

	2) Could someone mail the tutorial on Sectorama and the Amiga
Disk structure that was posted awhile back (like last year). I
looked at my copy and it stops right after giving a summary of
how to explore a floppy disk.

All I want to do is make sure that I never have to go through what I had to
do to get a file back (and please nothing on backups, this was nuked while
I was making backups - it's a long story).

Thanks,

Jon

If you are in luck, call Central Coast Software and see if their Quarterback
Tool has been out or not. It does do undelete for harddrive. The number
is in most magazine (They have been post ads for months now!)

Not too long ago I invadvertantly deleted an entire directory from my
Hard drive. This directory actually contained a data file that contained
over two years of data records. At this point I nearly cried. But because
I had previously owned a Commodore 128 and had undeleted files from from
floppies, I knew that there had to be a way. Fortunately, a friend of mine
had just given me a copy of a utility which he downloaded from
comp.binaries.amiga. It's called FixDisk. Reading the short doc file
that was in the archive told me that the author did not have a hard drive
and therefor could not guarantee that his program would work with one.

To make a long story short (really!), I ran the program from the CLI with
this invocation.

> fixdisk doom

Surprisingly, this neat little program started reading my entire hard drive.
About 25 minutes later it was done. The program then allowed me to
undelete the files that I wanted (acutally, I had to copy them to a floppy and
then re copy them to the hard drive). I'm posting this story so that others
with this problem may get some help. I can't recall the author's name but
If someone is intersted send me mail and I'll try to help.
