[comp.sys.amiga] Buying Amiga 2000's and 2500's

sparks@corpane.UUCP (John Sparks) (06/01/89)

I am getting ready to write an article for our local newsletter on buying
Amiga 2000's and 2500's through mail order. I need some expert advice from
those-of-you-that-know :-)

The questions I have:

1> What is the best price have you seen|heard for:
     a) Amiga 2000 - system box only, without hard drive
     b) Amiga 2500 - System box only, (with whatever comes in it)
     c) Various 68020 boards that you can plug into a stock 2000

2> [kind of related to #1] Is it more cost effective to buy a 2000 and buy the
hard drive, memory, and 68020 board separatly to make a 2500? Or is it cheaper
and/or better to buy the 2500? Why?

3> What is the best place to buy mail order in terms of price and
deliverability?

4> Which mail order places should one avoid.

5> Do you have any mail order tips? Horror stories?

6> One of the things you get from a local dealer is support and easy
returnability if you have a problem. How do you go about getting support and
repairs for mail ordered hardware?

I know many of you will tell me that I should 'support my local dealer' and
not go mail order. But my article is about mail ordering, how to do it and not
get stung. The readers can easily go down to the local dealer, but many of them
have asked about mail order so I am trying to help. Always nice to have a
choice, eh?

               ******** Please EMAIL me *****************

If I get enough requests for the info I will post a summary here.

Thanks.

M.C.S. in Michigan went bankruptcy and they still have ads in magazines but
don't even consider it anymore. My credit charge was stucked just because
their irresponsibility for charging me before shipping and then went
bankruptcy before they had it in stock. Maybe that's why they go bankruptcy.
Try LightSpeed! The have fair price and excellent service. Plus they have a
toll free customer service number!

Yikes! Please, friends of the net, don't confuse this schlock outfit with
the MCS that I work for! We're not in any way, shape or form related.

Hell, I didn't even know that there WAS another one :-<

As for the Amiga buying guide, post the sucker or email me a copy when it's
done... Please! I will be picking up one of these nice beasts in the next
few months.... although it is tempting to wait for the A3000.
