[comp.sys.amiga] DevCon '89 -- A Report

papa@pollux.usc.edu (Marco Papa) (06/18/89)

Just back from devCon '89 in SF. Quicky, this was the BEST devcon I have
attended. I'm kind of tired and I want to respect Gail's request to be quiet
about the disclosures, but I can say this:

* Almost ALL the gripes/requests that developers made at Devcon 88 in Wash.
will be addressed by release 1.4 of the system software.

* 1.4 will be a MAJOR release.

* Bill Hawes looked very happy (hint, hint!).

* We all came back with 2 HUGE oversized binders full of nicely printed
documentation. Very impressive!

* I was very pleased by Harry Copperman's speech and attitude.

* Dave Haynie won the Second Boing! award (AGAIN) and Randell Jesup, close
second, received honorable mention. For next year, Dave will be excluded
from the voting (executive decision :-).

* Commodore will start advertising again.

* The Usenet Meeting was as big and funny as last year's: Leo delivered another
oustanding version of Mike Smithwick's AmigaTrek 4.0. Mike promised to make
the old and new installments available publicly sometime in the future (on
Fish Disks?). LOTS of people showed up from comp.sys.amiga.{tech}.

* Lauren did an oustanding job in making everything run smoothly. Thanks
Lauren!

* Gail perfectly controlled the whole operation INCLUDING the nighly
dancing at the bar (she just would NOT leave the dance floor :-)

* Beer was used extensively to help make things more clear :-)

* Dale Luck showed an earlier version of Amiga X11 in color. It looked very
nice and fast.

* Rick Unland made public one more item the the Alpha, Beta ... list (see
my new .signature).

* At the final beach party, the largest ever number of Boing! jackets was
present.

I'll need a day to sleep. Good night.

Mike or Leo, please DO post it! They are hilarious!

(Thanks for the report, Marco)

Mike has copyrights on the AmigaTrek installments (and quite right so), and
stated that the DevCon version, wonderfully interpreted by Leo, is still a
"pre-release" version. As I mentioned, Mike promised to make the "final"
version available through approprite means. [I do have my own copy that
I picked up at DevCon, though].
