Fine, so people here posted that Elite won't work with expanded memory. But then others said that they didn't have problems. I LOVED this game on my Apple II+, so I just had to get it. But, YEP, IT SURE IS BUGGY. 1) I was cocky and thought if I configured my starboard as the hardware supported ram disk all would be ok. It ain't so. 2) It "crashes" very unpredictably. It doesn't really hang, the screen gets hosed but you are still flying. I expect I can make it to dock and save the game when this happens, if I don't run into pirates along the way. (Or lose my docking computer.) 3) I got a backdoor sheet off of rec.games.misc that said that these tricks work on both the Atari ST and Amiga versions. Stuff like typing SARA<manual key word> gets you into a character editor. Other things like turning off effects makes it possible to shoot thargoids with missiles. Well this doesn't work either. 4) Less paraphenalia than my Apple version. The Apple and C64 version came with a novella and a poster of all the ship types. This is missing that. 5) Finally, I didn't get a warrenty card. (I'll be calling the dealer.) And there is a date stamp on the inside part of the box flap, mine says "packaged Dec 1988" Now isn't this a kick! In light of 5, I wonder if I have a PAL version? How do I tell? The screen offset is awfully low, but the screen dimensions look right. (320x200, not something like 360x240.) I will keep it, I like this game anyway. My dealer has been selling out of the thing for some time now. I urge folks not to buy it any more so that Mr. Micro can get SOME money, but obviously more if he would fix those problems. (I mean, he needs money to live on, and if a big outfit like EA won't even fixhunk ARCHON, what can we expect from Mr. Micro{brain} if he doesn't sell at all?) -- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- I am just about fed up | Mike Davis and I will only take it | ..!att!ihlpm!jmdavis a few more times. |
