[comp.sys.amiga] 68020 based Amiga

protcoop@leibniz.uucp (06/19/89)

A friend of mine is in the market for a 68020 based Amiga system.
He wants something like the 2500UX that he can run UN*X on. He
wonders if he would be better off to just buy a stock 2500 from
Commodore, or if there is better price/performance in buying a
2000 and equipping it with 3rd party hardware? Could someone please
enlighten me (us) on what some good alternatives are to the 2500?
Also, could you please let me know what are the restrictions with
Commodore and other hardware (e.g. the 2090a not working in overscan).

Finally, does anyone know of a BSD UN*X port on the Amiga. My friend
(and I also) love UN*X but think that System V is a braindead attempt
at best. (Please no flames, I state this as an opinion, not fact).

[Things about a friend looking for an UN*X Amiga and the 2090 not working
in overscan]

First off, the 2090 works just GREAT in overscan. Runs just like a charm on
my overscan PAL workbench screen (690x274x2). The x2 is the deciding factor,
thats the bitplanes. The only modes the 2090 drastically goes down from it's
otherwise outstanding performance is in 4 bitplanes hi-res (ie.640x200/256 or
640x400/512) plus overscan. The current AMIX doesn't use 4 bitplane screens
as default (although it probably could).

And if your talking Amiga and Unix TODAY, it's an A2500. Full Stop. :-)
Currently AMIX only supports the A2620/A2630 and those units only know how
to handle the 209xx HD controllers (to boot Unix...).
These things might change, but not within the next 6 months.
And I dunno if a BSD UN*X will be ported, or if by the time this would happen
the AT&T stuff has come close to it. :-)
