For those of you who have been waiting for Professional Page 1.2, it arrived in my (snail) mailbox yesterday. I haven't had a chance to put it through its paces yet, but I'll bang on it tonight. The more significant changes include reading Professional Draw documents (of course), improved color separation, and supposedly a little better support for dot matrix printers (we'll see about *that*). One small flame: Gold Disk just threw the disk in with an update document and some flyers for other products. When I opened the envelope, the update document had several pages shoved between the disk gate & the jacket. The disk survived this unnatural act, but the gate seems to be bent out just a little. Hopefully, I can copy this without mangling the disk or my drive. Next time, put it in a separate envelope or shrink-wrap the papers! -- Larry Kollar ...!gatech!dcatla!mclek June 13, 1989: George Bush vetoes a raise in minimum wage. I sure as hell hope they've improved support for dot matrix printers, I was QUITE upset at the (lack of) quality output on my spiffy new DeskJet, it looked jut like the output from my imagewriter...pah. So maybe now they are using *real* scalable fonts. Let us know! >One small flame: Gold Disk just threw the disk in with an update document >and some flyers for other products. Hopefully, I can copy this without mangling the disk or my drive. If you think that's fun...try having the spring on the shutter come completely off of the disk...resulting in the shutter coming off *in your drive* AAARGHG! THAT was upsetting, not to mention the spring was in there rattling around... my life flashed before my eyes... By the way.... MEI Micro is selling disks for *69* cents each in lots of 25, and they are GOOD disks, I have had fewer failures with their disks than with Fuji or Sony's.... >Larry Kollar ...!gatech!dcatla!mclek -- Joe Pantuso joe@lakesys.lakesys.com Home(414)259-1897 Work(414)281-8700 Software ONE

Lots of them. But a recent batch almost had me thinking my external disk drive had gone bad - they all squeaked. Next batch was fine, most have been fine. But I always put an extra copy of important (to me) stuff (like my thesis work, etc.) on a Sony disk, which I've never had any troubles with. I always read about somebody on the net who claim that they n e v e r had a problem with el-cheapo disks, and yet when I try one -- or those that don't know better try one -- disaster city. On more than one occasion at the end of semester I have to go in with heavy tools on some poor (often literally) student's flimsy disk (some of them with a brand-name like Ve**a**m) to extract a control-code infested ASCII file of the paper they've been working feverishly on for the last 18 hours because their machine gags on the disk. Granted, Joe does say "fewer failures" but I fail to see how. Maybe he was just born lucky. :-) Flip side, joe piazza --- "Where's my other sock?" A. Einstein CS Dept. I just ordered another 200 from them....I intend to format a hundred of them as soon as I receive them and I'll let everyone know the failure rate. A question that comes to mind from this discussion: I recieved some ds/hd (pc type) disks courtesy of Adobe a few months back and I attempted to format and use them, out of six disks only ONE of them worked. Is there really that much of a physical difference between dd and hd disks? I was under the impression that disk material was fairly virgin when you recieve it and that all disks are made the same way--just some pass more rigourous(sp) test than others and are sold as hd. The last batch I bought from MEI (about two months ago) had 5 disks out of 25 that I had to format twice to get then to pass. I only use them for one time recording/archiving. They don't hold up under repeated usage. Hope others have better luck with MEI disks. Monty Saine
