[comp.sys.amiga] Net humor

doug@xdos.UUCP (Doug Merritt) (07/06/89)

You know, I'd previously avoided reading this thread (because my opinion of
professional wrestling is unprintable); but I notice something truly *amusing*
going on here:

Dan the Sneakers Man said:
> Is this not commercial abuse of our network?

Erik Gavriluk (no connection with the author of the game, notice) replied:
:No, because this is a truly innovative game. By simply existing on the Amiga,
:it will serve to upgrade ALL Amiga games to come. Look at a partial list of
:innovations--things NEVER seen before on any other game:
:
: --32 blazing colors (No more monochrome Amiga games!)
: --digitized sound (Finally, at long last!)
:
: In fact, I'm darn glad these people posted this annoucement. I was dead
: sick of reading all the "When, oh when will International Championship
: Wrestling finally be here?" posts.
      ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Note that Erik is actually being very *funny* here. Tongue in cheek, dry
humor, but very witty. This humor must have been missed, though:

Steven Den Beste didn't notice:
>"Arkanoids", released at least two years ago, used 32 colors. [...]
>"Who Framed Roger Rabbit" uses digitized sounds for sound effects

Karl Lehenbauer wasn't amused:
>Oh please! Some of the very first games available for the Amiga, 1.0 Kickstart
>types, had digitized sounds, for example, One-On-One.

The game announcer himself (Steve Stamper) wasn't amused:
>No claim was ever made that these functions are unique...

...but he *was* (perhaps understandably) piqued:
>apparently those publishers/manufacturers with "special net" status
>are the only ones allowed to post product announcements here

All *he* had claimed originally was:
>....in 32 Blazing Colors! [Featuring] Digitized sound effects

So come on guys, lighten up a little. And if you're going to take
the trouble to respond to somebody, give 'em a break and *read* their
posting before you say something...It *might* be humor. In real life you
can't always depend on smiley faces to alert you.
