[comp.sys.amiga] Online-Platinum Edition

detert@lognet2.af.mil (CMS David K. Detert) (07/06/89)

I'll give you some of my thoughts on the Platinum Edition of OnLine -- Stay
away until they fix it. For example:
1. I am calling my host using version 2.0 - it works, Platinum doesn't. I
have to call using 8N1, log into the LAN, then switch to 7E1 to talk to
LOGNET2. I know that can be a problem with LogNet2, but I don't have to
go through that with version 2.0

2. Kermit does not work in 7E1, I have to switch to 8N1 ONLY while trying
to download. Then I have to switch back to 7E1 to continue my session
with the host.

3. Hitting the space bar to redial a number when there is only 1 number
in the dialing queue, causes it to hang up (good), reset the dialing timer
(good), begin redialing (good) only to hang up again and then redial again.
The second redial works okay. Not sure what happens if there are more than
2-3 numbers in the queue.

I tried for almost 2 weeks now to live with this junk, but I'm going back
to 2.0. I really think this stinks since I have used OnLine from the
very beginning and was really looking forward to this latest upgrade. I
must admit the changes all LOOK goood, if only they worked (sigh).
Cheers, Dave

PS. I would be interested in hearing from others who have had these or similar
problems and any word of a fixed version. Thanks in advance.

PPS. Anyone know if they respond to calls or would I just be wasting my
breath and money.

Here! here! I found the same problems, so I have to go back to 2.0 myself.
I haven't bothered to call them yet, since I assume their tech support line
will be busy. . .

If they don't get upgrades out within the next month or two, I'll probably
go with A-Talk, (particulary since the author is on the net, Marco).

I must admit, the new online packaging is nice.

Way back OXXI was offering A-Talk III to Online! users at $60, which was
less than the discounted mail order price. I am not sure if they still
offer this (I have no control over these things any more as a developer,
non-publisher).

My advice is to junk Online! and use JRComm or just about any other terminal
program, PD, Shareware or Commercial. ANY of them are better than Online!.
I am really starting to wonder about Micro-Systems Software. Just about
everything they put out has bugs/problems and it takes them a year to come
out with a simple fix, let alone a major overhaul. We get better service
from the PD or Shareware authors.
