[comp.sys.amiga] ARP 'sort' command and PIPE:

pelletier@grove.UUCP (Brian Pelletier) (07/05/89)

I remember hearing about some problems with the 1.3 PIPE: device and ARP 1.3.
Sorry to waste Net bandwidth if this has already been discussed, but I don't
recall this specific case being mentioned previously. This is my dilemma:
I wrote an AREXX program which extracts the subject lines from comp.sys.amiga
messages and outputs them to a PIPE:. A second process (launched from the same
AREXX program) is running a 'sort' command, using the PIPE: file as its input.
This works fine with the Commodore 1.3 'sort' command, but when I use the ARP
'sort' I get an 'error - can't open pipe:<filename>' message. It also seems to
lock up the pipe: device after this.

For now, I'm back to the original 'sort' command, and things are working fine.
I'd like to use the ARP command if possible. Any help would be appreciated!

            -Brian

I just read the ARP docs the other night and it certainly does state
that there is problems with the standard 1.3 PIPE: device. According
to the documentation the only pipe that works properly with ARP is
William Hawes' PIP:. You know, the one that comes with that great
program known as CONMAN. (Thanks Bill, this truely IS the greatest
thing since sliced bread.) As a matter of fact, I also replaced
C='s NEWCON: device with Bill's. This creates an environment that
is much more powerful than the vanilla system. Another nice thing
about ARPs with Bill's PIP: is that you can do real pipes, you know,
'DIR df0: | sort'. This is NOT done with temp files so you can put
any number of pipes together in one command. FINALLY! HURRAY!

This brings about a question of my own. Why the heck (are you
listening Commodore?) doesn't Commodore include these products as
standard? If I am not mistaken, both products were offered to C=
to include as standards in the OS. What is wrong Commodore? Don't
you like the best? These are most certainly superior to the 1.3
released similar things.
