[comp.sys.amiga] Undocumented flag to FORMAT

noel@uokmax.UUCP (Bamf) (07/14/89)

The 1.3 version of FORMAT has a flag [INHIBIT] that is not mentioned
in the documentation. What exactly does this inhibit? (I'm
ignoring the multitude of jokes that this prompts, in favor of knowledge...)

It turns off the disk validator for the indicated drive as soon as
the program starts. Without it, you must hit return to start formatting
before the drive will become "busy". With it, the drive goes "busy"
as soon as the format program has loaded. I suspect that this option
is there for the few poor souls who have crashed a floppy so badly that
just putting it in gurus the machine (hence the undocumentedness of it).
Format it with inhibit and don't put the disk in until it prompts you to
press return. Note that DiskCopy inhibits right away; I wonder why?

[INHIBIT] inhibits the drive validation mechanism. Try this, use
the inhibit option on a drive with no disk in, then insert a disk at the
RETURN prompt... Then try it again without the INHIBIT flag set. Adding
the INHIBIT flag allowed them to use the same code for CLI and Workbench
formats...
