[comp.sys.amiga] Agnus Woes

LARSEN-D@osu-20.ircc.ohio-state.edu (YUCKO Broccoli) (07/20/89)

I called up my local amiga dealer all excited about getting fat agnus for
my 1000. Much to my disappointment I was told it couldn't be done. Maybe
this was dumb but I didn't know. Does anyone know if Commodore has plans
for a fat like agnus for us poor 1000 owners? Or is that not possible due
to hardware constraints, etc.

Well, somebody has done it and posted instructions on BIX on how to do it.
He might make it a "LUCAS"-like project after all.

Not only can it be done, it *has* been done. Here's the relevant
portion of the message which the new board's designer left on BIX:

 ================================================

From: gbtibbs (Gregory B. Tibbs, Miamisburg, OH)
Date: Tuesday, July 18, 1989. 09:48:08 EDT

1) Allows use of the New 1 Meg Agnus by replacing WCS with a new PCB

2) Contains 1 Meg of chip ram on daughterboard

3) Motherboard chip ram becomes fast ram

4) Provision for A500/a2000 style ROM or converting 256K of motherbd
   ram into write protected WCS.

5) Support for 1 Meg motherboard RAM conversion

6) OKI clock chip at correct address

7) A2000 style video slot subset - no parallel or audio support

8) No modifications to the motherboard

9) A minimum of three wires are needed to go from the daughterboard
to the motherboard (others are optional for video slot).

10) Jumpers control motherboard RAM addressing to remove electronic
conflicts with other internal RAM expansions. If not a $c00000
then memory must be 'addmemed' in.

11) As of today all but items 4 and 7 above have been checked out and
made 100% operational. My A1000 was built from dealer 'junk'
and had no boot ROMS and I lack the proper 36 pin connectors to
test the video slot. These will be remedied this week.

So yes, there's hope for A1000 owners.

No, I don't have any more information---this may be released commercially,
semi-commercially, or as a LUCAS-like project. I have no idea how much
it might cost, or when it might be available, or how difficult it might
be to install or set up. Sorry. The best way to ask questions is
to join BIX (flat rate is relatively cheap) and ask Greg :-) I might
summarize any news, but I'd expect that it'll be a while before there's
anything major to report.

Well, if someone has instructions, could you please post them for
those of us without BIX access? Sounds like another fun project!
thanks!
