[comp.sys.amiga] Update on AIR/Megatronics floppy drives.

phoenix@ms.uky.edu (R'ykandar Korra'ti) (08/10/89)

As some here may recall, I've been posting my experiences in dealing
with Megatronics, Corp., out of Logan, Utah. They make the AIR drives -
expansion drives for Amiga computer systems. My advise continues to be:
do NOT repeat NOT buy an AIR drive under ANY circumstances.
Briefly recapping: I own an A500 with 1 meg of RAM. I decided to
purchase an external floppy (DF1:) and chose the AIR drive for a few reasons,
the most important being 1) I'd seen one work well before, and 2) they claimed
low power consumption, important on A500s.
The drive I received did not work. It has random and repeatable write
errors which make the drive extremely unreliable. I contacted Megatronics,
after conducting a short, informal poll on this message area trying to find
others with AIR drives having similar problems. (Many A500 owners did).
Their responce was that the reason so many A500 owners are having problems
with the AIR drive is because - and I quote - "It doesn't work right with
the A500." Now this is a drive they ADVERTISE for the A500.
I made the tech give me an RMA number anyway, and I returned it for
warranty work. The tech told me that "95 to 98 percent" of all the drives
they get back are "just fine" and that it's all the Amiga's fault. I sent
it in.
Well, as of today, I got it back. Or rather, I got a different one back,
with no letter of explanation. It has exactly the same problems the original
did, if not worse. (The original drive would fail to write properly when
copying all Workbench files two times in five. The new drive, so far, has
failed three times of four. The internal drive functions properly.)
My summation and opinion: AIR/Megatronics is knowingly advertising a
product for a specific purpose (use with all Amiga computers - and they
don't just mean the A2000, since they market a DIFFERENT drive for the A2000)
that does not work. They know it does not work and refuse to correct the
problem. My action at this point will be to contact the Better Business
Bureau (both in Kentucky and in Utah), the US Postmaster, and the Federal
Trade Commission. I am also posting this message as warning to anyone who
may consider purchasing an AIR drive from Megatronics: I strongly advise
you against dealing with this company in any shape, form or fashion.
If anyone else out there has had similar experiences with AIR drives,
I ask that you write me with the complete details. I will be passing them
on to the appropriate authorities. Or, contact those authorities yourself.
Companies like this hurt everyone.
                                           - R'ykandar Korra'ti
