I assume this is an A1000... the problem is probably one of two things. First,
there are a couple PAL's on the daughterboard which are too slow to handle more
than about 1 expansion device on most stock 1000's. These should be replaced
with faster ones if you have more than one expansion device. Also, all the pals
should be grounded. I ca supply detailed information if you think this is the
problem & want to make some modifications.

I had the same problem about 2 years ago. After talking with
CBM i found out that the sidecar isn't designed to handle being
passed through. Supposedly, the timing involved with the sidecar
is too critical to handle anything else on the bus. So, I spent
the money on memory and a SCSI harddrive and I only use the sidecar
when I really need it which isn't that often.

When I was using a 1000-SideCar setup I used an "INSIDER" (the real one)
to gain memory expansion and a MS-DOS XT hard drive controller to get
hard drives on the system. Of course it didn't autoboot, but back then
the 2000 didn't exist either. A friend is now using that set up with the
Janus 2.0 software and its a real smooth system. Highly recommenred for
   those who have a 1000 & SideCar looking for expansion . . . .
