[comp.sys.amiga] Fool Questions; bear with me.

cfchiesa@bsu-cs.bsu.edu (Christopher Chiesa) (08/14/89)

Forgive me, but this newsgroup flows TOO FAST, and TOO DEEP, for me to gather
the information I want by "just reading along." :-(

Could someone E-mail me (reducing the net.bandwidth! :-) ) in regard to the
following topics:

 1) I want to run UUCP/Usenet on my Amiga 1000 with 1meg memory and two
    floppies (no HD). Issues:

     a) What versions of UUCP software do I need? I know there are several,
but not what the advantages/disadvantages of each.

     b) How/where do I obtain UUCP software? (I was on the point of sending
my $10 to Sneakers Computing many months ago, when he/they "handed off"
to someone else whose name I never caught.)

     c) How do I go about finding a "feed" for news? Despite my Indiana posting
address, I'm in Rochester, NY. I'd like to take a feed from UR or RIT,
although there are also Xerox and Kodak machines. Anybody know about
policies at any of these places?

     d) Will floppies handle the workload? Or am I doomed to failure if I don't
        get a hard disk?

  2) I want to run DNET so as to be able to browse News AND download files (most
likely "binary" Zoo archives) from this Indiana machine at the same time.
     Issues:

     a) Am still in the process of trying to obtain the DNET 2.0 binaries that
came through a while ago; they're not archived HERE, but my only "other"
account is on Portal where two of the four parts are incomplete. (Got
ahold of Bob Page about this, and have been trying to get the full post-
ing from the archive server on kilowatt, but so far it hasn't even re-
sponded to my request for an INDEX... sigh...) Any other places to get
this software? (I have SOURCES archived locally, but can't compile
them; it will be a couple of months yet before I can afford the current
        release of Lattice C...)

     b) The Powers That Be just "upgraded" (cough) this system from BSD 4.?
(2 or 3) to something called "MORE/bsd". Does anyone know if this will
still allow DNET's "Unix side" to run?

     c) Almost forgot to ask -- what "resources" do I need on my Amiga to run
DNET successfully? Will I be able to put the DNET disk in one drive,
and download files onto a blank in the other? Or do I need DNET in
one drive, WB in another, leaving the RAM: disk as the only destination
for stuff? (E.g., once again, "am I screwed without a hard disk?")

Sorry if these questions have been answered a hundred times; I feel HOPELESSLY
overwhelmed by the volume of things DONE, BEING done, AVAILABLE, etc., on the
Amiga! I've had mine a year and I can't even program it yet, including typing
things in from books, *except* in AmigaBasic. Sigh... Ah well, onward and up-
ward. I guess I'll just have to NOT WORRY about never gonna be a famous person
on this machine :-) !

Thanks for responses; remember -- Email please so as not to clog this group!
