A while back I posted questions in this group about the safety of using the B.A.D. disk optimizer on a hard disk. I also asked some questions about improving performance of my A1000 Supra hard disk by changing the MaxTransfer. Here is a summary of replies: SUPRA DATA Yesterday I called Supra Tech support and was told that on the A1000 Supra 4x4 you may increase MaxTransfer (using SupraEdit). I tried it last night and got no significant increase. Other info from Supra: They will be coming out with new software in "about 2 months" which will support streaming tapes and removable media! The tech said Supra used DiskPerf2 to get the figures quoted in their advertisement (326K/sec). This figure was on a FFS, blind read, virgin, Quantum 80S. Also I've heard that a new release of FFS is being worked by C=. Any chance of a comment from someone involved? Enjoy. A friend of mine bought B.A.D. (3.0, if I remember correctly) and it messed up his autoboot partition on his 2090A controlled ST-506 Mitsubishi drive. I tried it on my Micropolis 1325 FFS partitions (using a plain 2090) and it worked OK. But considering the amount of time it takes the sucker to re-arrange a 17MB partition (~45 minutes), I don't think I'll try it again. The result was undisputable faster, though, >PS I mailed ls 3.1 to anyone who asked but many bounced. I posted it here > since it was fairly small - I hope it is acceptable. Uhm, yes. But you should send stuff like this to Bob Page (page@sun.com) first. Announce on the net that you did so, and wait at least two weeks before posting it to c.s.a. In your next posting you write: >What is the purpose for having the multiple buffer runs in diskperf? To show you what speed you can expect from transfering/loading small files compared to large files. >If I want to gain the greatest speed am I supposed to up my buffers in the >mountlist (or SupraEdit screen)? I don't want to waste 32K for a large >buffer for such a small increase. The diskperfs "buffers" state the size of the data that is read/written. Don't confuse them with cache buffers. >When Supra quotes 326K/sec (on the A500 interface in their full page ads in >AmigaWorld) do they use disperf or what? I assume they kludge it to get >the best results (buffers = 100K?!? maybe). They probably have an optimized test program running under optimal conditions (like high priority, no background tasks, lotsa buffers). >A question for Supra owners: has anyone tried to up the MaxTransfer value? >The Supra software sets it to 64K, but I believe a larger number (or none if >possible) would provide faster performance. Is it reliable? I'm no Supra owner, but I tested one a while ago. I don't think you can safely increase this value. Ask Supra (76004.565@CompuServe.com) about it. Depending on other input, you might wanna post a summary for all the other "ramblers" out there. ;-) ;-) >Thanks for listening to my rambles. I had made a backup "just in case." Good thing I did. It corrupted the disk so bad I had to reformat and retore the data. I haven't had the guts to try it since. -- - Joel E. I assume they kludge it to get : the best results (buffers = 100K?!? maybe). They're either using Diskperf or Diskperf2. Note that Diskperf2 *does* give higher values than the original Diskperf. Diskperf2 also does a speed check with 256K buffers... I imagine they're also testing with the 2 meg memory board onboard also. You will get better speeds with real fast mem than your will with just c00000 mem and chip mem... : A question for Supra owners: has anyone tried to up the MaxTransfer value? : The Supra software sets it to 64K, but I believe a larger number (or none if : possible) would provide faster performance. Is it reliable? I played with that for a while several months ago. You get slightly better speeds with slightly larger MaxTrans, but not significant improvements. The 64K MaxTrans is in their because their DMA card for the 2000 needs it, and they use the same software for all their cards. Feel free to change the MaxTrans on your 1000 to whatever you want. : Thanks for listening to my rambles. : : : ---------------------------------------------------------------------- : "Above opinions are my own, not my employer's" : John Lindwall johnl@tw-rnd.SanDiego.NCR.COM -- -Bill Seymour ...tektronix!reed!percival!agora!billsey ...tektronix!sequent.UUCP!calvin!billsey Bejed, Inc.
