[comp.sys.amiga] Killer Demo deadline--TOO SOOOOOON!

Classic_-_Concepts@cup.portal.com (08/17/89)

Am I the only one so busy that I'll NEVER get to enter the Killer Demo
Contest???? I've wanted to each time and the heavens continue to conspire
against me. I've got this **KILLER** demo idea that just really wants to
get done. I said THIS YEAR. But my gosh, the deadline is 2 weeks away
and I haven't started yet. Sigh. Hey, any plans to extend the deadline,
a few days, hours, or even minutes?????? If so, let me know!!

Why bother???? They probably wont award the prizes again
this year! A sysop in the D.C. area here, Eric Fleisher, was
a winner in last years contest, and has yet to receive
anything!! Also, I've heard of several people who have
sent their money to BADGE to get the video of the animations,
only to receive nothing, nor hear one word from BADGE.

The problem is, everybody complains, but nobody ever wants to do anything!
This year, no one was even willing to run the contest, so it's kinda being
done by committee. I have my doubts as to whether it will happen at all.
Last year's contest was a disaster, largely because everyone griped but
no one was willing to put together the contest disks (a video was never
planned) or call Go-Amigo to get them to send the last two prize donations.
Instead, they pushed all the work on one guy who worked six days a week.
No wonder things don't get done.

About your friend, being a "winner" doesn't mean anything by itself. There
were more winning categories than donated prizes, so unless he was one of
the top winners, he just won an honorable mention.

Hope this year is better. I've got my demo ready. (I won third place last
overall (best custom demo) last year. Hope to get my prize soon)

There are some misunderstanding in BADGE for last year Killer Demo, especially
when Computer Attics withdrew their prize. (CBM had substituted one for that)

However, the people in charge of the contest have ALREADY received the prizes
from some contributor such as A2620 from Go Amigo and Digi series from NewTek,
so this year will probably more organized than before.

If you have an idea and afraid of missing the deadline, the BADGE meeting will
probably delay for one week for next month. I THINK (really mean that) you
can still submit the demo to them, but act quick!

Don't be so negative! As Thad pointed out, we know that things didn't go
so smoothly last year; prizes arrived late, they were shipped late,
and some haven't reached the winners. Last year's organizers are working
on making sure the winners get their prizes sometime soon...

Learning from that experience, it's our intention to make this year's
contest run smoothly and to have the prizes out within two weeks
after the contest. To assure this, we are getting all the prizes
before the contest; we already have some in hand.

This year's contest is being organized by a committee of four (Grant
Tegtmeyer, Lee Taran, Gary Starkweather, and Ali Ozer), with help from
various other members of BADGE; if you recall this was the way it was
done the first time we held the Killer Demo Contest, two years ago.
We all want it to be a success and will do our best to make it so.

So do enter, and don't worry about being late. The
deadline (Sept 1st) forth allows us enough time to get back to you in case
we can't get your demo to run; if we get your demo after the deadline
we will still try it out and get back to you if something's wrong, but
available time will be short. If the demo gets to us a few days before
the contest, it will still get it in, but we might not be able to
get in touch with you if something's wrong with it.

Currently the contest is scheduled to take place at BADGE's regular
monthly meeting, on Sept 21st, 1989. As usual, the audience will judge.

The demos will be sent out to Commodore (for distribution to dealers),
Fred Fish, and various archives and bulletin boards within two weeks
after the contest. If you enter, you might quickly become famous!

OK, after going to Badge, I hafta eat my words on this one. They organizers
seem well-prepared, enthusiastic, and seem to have lots of ideas on how to
make the contest run smoothly this year. I hear Go Amigo delivered their
gift early this year after the flak they got (and deserved) after last year.
Besides, DRAM prices are low now.

About the deadline, I don't think it will be extended, as the people running
the contest want plenty of time to get the programs running and ready for
the contest.

Well, unofficial procedure in the past has been that stuff submitted up to
the last day before the contest is usually accepted. (the deadline
usually slips because 90% of the entries arrive after the deadline :-)
Give it a try. If it isn't accepted, you have a FULL YEAR to make
your demo perfect, add music, guru-proof, etc., etc.

Kinda wonder if there is someone out there who has been working on
the ultimate killer demo for the last 3 years, and will submit it
3 years from now to be become the ultimate demo...
