[comp.sys.amiga] Industrail Application Suggestions Sought.

nop@cup.portal.com (Randy G Jouett) (08/31/89)

Well, I'm working on an industrial application -- involving the
Amiga 2500, no less :) -- and in desperate need of a decent 750 VA UPS
(Uninterrupted Power Supply). Anyone care to make a suggestion as to
which brand name to purchase? I have $800-$1000 bucks to allocate toward
the thing.

Incase anyone is interested, I'm going to be using the Amiga to
aquire data from a 12 bit, 16 channel multi-plexed A-to-D board which
monitors the drilling of an oil well in real-time (pump storkes, pump
pressure, pit levels, hook load, weight on drill bit, weight on the
drill-string (many pieces of drill-pipe connected, of course), chormatic
gas analysis (chromatigraph and HP Integrator), etc. In other words,
tons of external, analog events :).

Anywho, I would also like your opinion on the system that I have
spec'ed for the job (Not that I can think for myself, but I think many
minds in motion are better than one) :

	- Amiga 2500.
	- 2nd internal floppy.
	- 1080 monitor.
	- ASDG dual-serial card (for real-time data xmit to an on-shore data
	  aquisition center.
	- ASDG ISBX card.

Haven't locked down which A/D card to use, yet, but I'm looking; any
suggestions appreciated. Also, I'm thinking about replacing the the 2000'
HD with a Quantum 80s. Anyone think that this drive will have any problems
in this situation? That is, you have never been shaken until you've been
on a drilling platform :)

I'm also in the market for a decent HD back-up system; probably going
to go with a decent sized streamer or the new Panasonic 11 meg SCSI.

Re: Randy Jouett's quest for a UPS to power his Amiga ...

Why do I get the feeling all my previous postings in this regards have been
a waste of my time? 4 times already and STILL the same question is asked.
Sheesh. :-(

In any event, I'm running my systems on several SAFE 500W units and several
SAFE 1200W units. Wouldn't buy anything else as these are the best (in my
opinion).

SAFE can be reached at:

	SAFE Power Systems, Inc.
	528 W. 21st Street
	Tempe, AZ 85282 602/894-6864

Not knowing Randy's residence (since over 90% of PORTAL's subscribers call
in via Telenet from outside California), I can suggest my local dealer as an
excellent reference for the UPS (and other power protection systems):

	John Kiefer, President
	POWERSAFE, Inc.
	Sunnyvale, CA 408/773-1220

Powersafe is NOT a walk-in store; they would, for example, "wire up" Lockheed
Missiles and Space Co., FMC, PGE, etc. But if you mention my name as a
reference, I'm sure they'd be happy to help you out. John, his father-in-law,
and I used to work at GTE back in the early 1960's. John also has an Amiga,
so he's well-versed in the particulars.
