[comp.sys.amiga] Amiga/Genloc Application

alt@cbnewsd.ATT.COM (art.l.todesco) (09/07/89)

I am looking for the Amiga/GenLoc Guru in Netland. I am thinking of adding an
Amiga to a VHS editing system to generate characters and do all of the nice
things for which the Amiga is known. I know nothing about Amiga. I am a PC
convert. What is the best hardware for the Genloc/video function? What other
nice SEG-type functions are available? What's the best software? Sorry for
dumb questions.

I have some friends who are doing exactly this for their video business.

The Magni 4004 is the best. I may not have the part number exactly
correct, since I am giving you this from memory. But don't worry.
There is no other company with a similar name selling for the Amiga.

I recommend you buy from a reputable dealer, preferably not mail
order. The Magni is not trivial to configure. And like all complex
devices, they sometimes require a warranty. Alas, the Magni that my
friends bought did not work when delivered. After it was fixed, the
Magni worked great. Unfortunately at that point the hard disk (a 40MB
Rodime BTW) in their Amiga 2000HD failed. That is being repaired now.
(I suspect it was damaged by UPS when it was sent in for the Magni
repair. That could happen to anyone. But its another reason to avoid
mail order.)

Those questions were not dumb. I hope you enjoy the Amiga. It really
is a nice computer.

I don't get it. Why did he have to send the whole computer back
just to get the genlock fixed?

These are business users, not hackers. They bought the system fully
assembled with the Magni card installed into the motherboard.

An interesting detail is that they did not buy the system thru mail
order. They bought it in Seattle Washington when they were up there.
But rather than drive from Salem Oregon to Seattle, they mailed it.

This time they have delivered the system to a local dealer for repair.
Lets hope it works this time. It has already been in repair for a
couple of weeks.

I have a ProGen for my 1000. I use it in a VHS editing system and
find have had good results (*considering we ARE talking VHS).
Its's mediunm priced ($350 +/_-)
Progressive Peripherials out of Denver; 464 Kalamath St. Denver,
CO 80904... Phone# 303-825-4144/ FAX# 303-893-6938. The ProGen
is a basic genlock with little in the way of bells and whistles.
Progressive Peripherials also sell the SuperGen ($750), I
believe, which has two faders..

I guess it all depends on how much you want to spend. I'd start
getting some AMIGA magazines and
shop around in there 'cause there is a whole lot going
on with AMIGAs and video right now and this is going to
increase dramatically soon with the new George Luycascas Ad campaigns
that will start up here soon.

Ads far as software goes it really is a matter of preference and
need. I would look at DPAINT III for sure.. it's a good general
graphics and animation utility. I also use The Director.

It really depends on what you are going to do (eg anims,
ray trace, just titles , etc).

Welcome to AMIGAville you wont be sorry.
