Vegemite sounds just like a product that has been on sale in Britain for at least 50 years called Marmite - it's constituents are identical and it does look like the sludge ... etc. Funny I've been eating it for over 25 years on an almost daily basis and that never occured to me before. I like it on bread and butter with cheese or meat or both. My father swears by it for every ailment (I wish he wouldn't swear) and doesn't know about vegemite. As he's in New Zealand at the moment I'll have to go home and phone him now !! Marmite can be obtained in most of the local Safeway stores about here at a somewhat inflated price and only in silly little 4 oz. bottles, not the real man's 16 oz. juggerjars we get at home. Do any Americans have a tradition of eating Marmite? Does Marmite mean something in Aussie land so that it had to be called Vegemite ? How about Canadians? I think supplies in the U.S. are obtained from Canada. Let's move this to net.misc to avoid flames !! Bob Palin {ucbvax, decvax}!tektronix!zehntel!varian!bob
