[comp.sys.amiga] Good Publicity and a question

farhi@athena.mit.edu (Bill Hoston) (09/19/89)

Hello everyone,

I just saw the latest issue of Computers in Physics and was greeted with
several pages with Amiga screenshots. They were part of an article by
Dennis Rapaport entitled Visualizing Physics. In the article he
discusses the merits of interactive visualization of physical
phenomenon that can be acheived with modern inexpensive home
computers. In the article he mentions what he feels is necessary for
visualization mentioning a mouse interface and the ability to do
smooth animation and decent computing power. He doesn't mention the
Amiga in the article but in an inset he describes the equipment which
he used. He discusses the "special purpose hardware to enhance
graphics performance" and a "relativley easily accessed visual
interface." He lists all Amiga models and even manages to mention
the optional '020 accelerator board (not used in his work).

The pictures were all non-interlace (though he does write of the
availability of 400 lines vertical) and range from some superimposed
sine waves and planetary orbits to plots of the Mandelbrot set,
diffusion limited aggregation and other statisical physics shots. I
hope I haven't rambled to long on this but it was good to see this in
a magazine/journal that is so dominated by Big Blue and Little Red
and all the high-priced workstations.
If I recall correctly, CiP had an article about a year ago that
mentioned the Amiga.

Now that I am here I have a question. I have heard rumors about 2.0
breaking everything. I really don't have a sense of what that means.
Is it likely to cause developers now lurking on the sidelines to wait
until 2.0 is in more or less in a stable form? If that is the case it
seems that the absolute latest time for release of 2.0 would be
simultaneously with the A3000 (Conjecture from an absolute outsider).
Could someone please (gently) inform me about what it means to "break
everything?"

yes, Dennis works at the Bar Ilan university in Israel, which is, as
far as I know, the only university which has Amigas. They have about
15 Amigas, some 2000's and some 1000's. Some of the Amigas are used
by students who learn C, some used by staff members. I think that
they started using the Amiga for TeXing as well. They also interface
some of the Amigas to the lab equipment.

Actually, the DO have an A2620 board now.

Oh, I guess the 30+ at Ohio State don't count. Or the ones in Wisconsin, or
at Berkley, ... ;-)

Add the University of Kentucky to the list of universities with at
least some official Amiga representation.

More relevant: has anybody here had a compiler suddenly stop
producing code? I'm using Draco; it was working; then it quit working.
I didn't change anything that I can think of; it still compiles the
programmes; BLINK still links them; when I try to run the result, it
GURUs; illegal instruction (Guru 00...004.whatever). It just stopped
compiling anything, including things it has compiled before. Nothing else
is wrong; things which were compiled before this weirdness still run just
fine, and the same problems appear on other systems.
I might be missing something Really Ctoopid (TM), but right now, I'm
at a loss.

There are Amigas here at Berkeley? Are you sure? I moved out of the dorms
last spring... ;-)

No real flame but......
It's obvious to the rest of the world that he is talking about universities in
Isreal. So why did you miss this?

In a similar vein, *if* there are Amigas here at UW-Mad (if you mean
somewhere else, sorry), they aren't in the labs or represented at MACC-
which handles stuff like disks and software for the campus micros.

I meant ofcourse the only university __in Israel__, not the only university
in the world. I know that Amigas are used by many more universities around
the world ( or else how would we have the ulowell graphics board? ;-) )
