[comp.sys.amiga] Probs expanding to 1Mb chip

CCGAVIN@uqvax.decnet.uq.oz (Gavin Stone-Tolcher...Prentice Computer Centre) (10/11/89)

I have an A500 computer that is some 4 months old and recently decided that it
was time to expand it's memory to 1Mb. After taking the machine apart, I noted
that it has a new 8372A Agnes with four 44256-10 cmos chips installed and four
slots free. I rang two Australian Commodore servive centres to enquire as to the
cost of the upgrade. To my suprise both centres informed me that I would have
to purchase a 3Mb Agnes as well as the new ram chips, and they were still
waiting on Commodore to supply said chips.

I replied to this by saying that I believed the Agnes chip in my machine would
support 1Mb chip ram and that they should be able to get the chips from any
wholesale supplier. They then replied with, "Sorry we are not aware of the Agnes
chip in your machine and can only use Commodore sourced Ram chips (which we
don't know how much will cost)". It seems a bit strange that they have no ram
chips for a new version of a machine that has been marketed in Australia for
more four months.

My questions are:

		1. Can the Agnes chip in my machine access 1Mb chip memory.

		2. Is there anything more to Expanding its' memory than
soldering the chips in place. (the main board even has
512k/1Mb stamped next to the ram slots)

		3. What is this 3Mb Agnes Commodore Aust. keep telling me about
and why would'nt they know about the internal layout of my
machine. (ie that it has a 8372A Agnes)
