[net.general] proposing a new newsgroup to discuss sex-roles

geo (02/25/83)

I would like to propose a new newsgroup focussed around our
changing sex-roles. I am interested in discussing the changing
nature of feminity and masculinity. Because of some of the is-
sues raised by the women's movement and other groups, many of us
are re-evaluating what it means to be men, or what it means to be
women.

I don't think this discussion really belongs in net.women or
net.singles. Net.women was formed to "share experiences and sup-
port women". The discussions in net.singles seem to focus around
meeting, dating and marrying members of the opposite sex.

I would like to see discussions of broader scope, focusing on how
we react to these challenges to our political, social, cultural,
ethical, and sexual prejudices. I know that for myself, and I
suspect for most people, the sexual aspect is the most frighten-
ing. I find myself doing things that have traditionally been as-
sociated with women, like for instance, looking for sex because I
wish affection.

So my questions are [1] How many people would be interested in
having a forum to discuss these issues? [2] Do you think the ex-
isting groups provide such a forum? As usual, votes and comments
to me by mail, and I will summarize. As usual, followup articles
should be submitted to net.news.group.
