    Yes, there really is a word in Spanish "amiga" meaning friend
    of the female gender.  "amigo" means friend of the male gender.
    I say this after having had two semesters of Spanish.  If the
    Amiga was actually named after the Spanish word, then it is a
    friend of the female gender.
