[comp.sys.amiga] Blank Disks

quang@csuf3b.UUCP (Quang Ngo) (10/11/89)

I ordered 250 blank disks from MEI for $0.69 a piece. Unfortunately, at least
1 out of every 10 disks are bad. Who sales error-free disks with reasonable
price?

Thank you,

Quang Ngo^

DISKETTE CONNECTION sells Sony 3.5" DS/DD disks for less than a dollar
each, in packs of 50. I have ordered from them several times, and I think
they have excellent service.

You can find their numbers in any MACWORLD magazine -- they have
3 different stores around the USA. I order from the Delaware store.
They have an 800 number, so you can call 1-800-555-1212 (800 Information)
to find out their phone numbers.

If you're in LA and hate Mail-order, Pillarco Inc sells "Control Data" disks
for under $1.00... Call them at:

(800) 441-3475 Los Angeles, Ca 90042

(Lucky UCLA people!)

Note: Not affiliated with Pillarco.. (wouldn't mind if I were tho!)

It's called production costs. 100% certified error free disks are now
selling for $1.50/Disk (Sony) And 100% Guaranteed (may have some bad
disks) are going for about $1.15 - $1.35 (Sony Bulk). The difference
is in the testing. The more they test, the more it costs them, the more
you pay. In today's market $0.69 disks are "Untested" disks. About the
only test these things go through are for clear spots (no oxide) and
being able to spin in the jacket.

Actual response : A reasonable price for error free DSDD 3.5" disks is
$1.50 a disk. Nearly everyone sells them.

Unfortunately, MEI has a bad reputation for constantly changing quality
control. I've had batches of 100 black disks that had no more than 1
or 2 bad ones. Then again, I had a batch of 50 blue disks with a 50% failure
rate (you could even see grooves on the surface of the media).
Save all those bad disks. All you need do is call MEI, tell them how many
went sour and they will send you replacements pronto. They let you throw out
the bad ones yourself.

Oh, btw- more bad news. I've been getting the same MEI disks lately for
$.49 each by using catalog number CAT11. The expiration date is 12/15/89
(although the operators have told me the expiration dates don't always
count, it's just there incase they need to REALLY enforce it due to
shortages or somesuch)

The SoftWarehouse stores sell SONY DSDD disks, 15 to a pack, WITH a
"free" disk holder, for $16.00 (plus tax).

They also have good prices on other brands.

They are in Houston, Dallas, Denver, and a few other places i dont remember.

I've dealt with these folks before -- on many occasions since they were just
several blocks away from me when I lived in Dallas. They have an 800 number
which you can get from the 800 Operator (sorry, I don't have the receipts or
anything close by). I believe that Soft Warehouse is also in LA and Atlanta.
The great thing was that these folks had basically mail order prices in a
store that you could walk right into (if it wasn't too crowd and it could get
VERY crowded at times!). Mainly they deal in supplies (disks, paper, mouse
pads, etc) PC clones, monitors and printers of all types, and Mac and PC
software. I and many of my friends in Texas never had any problems with them.
In Dallas they certainly snarfed up quite a bit of business from local retailers
because of their prices.
