[comp.sys.amiga] Apple and the right to lie

mjsagar@sandia.gov (9123 SAGARTZ, MATHIAS J.) (10/23/89)

In the Monday, Oct. 16 issue of the Wall Street Journal there
was an article about Apple's defense against a lawsuit brought by a
group of disgruntled investors. It seems that back when the Lisa
was being introduced Apple officials "created public excitement by
touting Lisa as a office computer that would revolutionize the
workplace and be extremely successful in its first year." The
investors claimed that prior to the fanfare, the company had circulated
internal memos indicating problems with Lisa. When poor Lisa sales
came in, the stock plunged from a high to $63.50 to $17.37. The article
summarized the court ruling as follows,

"A federal appeals court in San Francisco ruled that
shareholders can't hold corporate officials liable for false sales
projections on new products if the news media concurrently revealed
substantial information about the product's flaws. .........
The court was careful to say that the adverse information appeared
in the very same articles and received the same attention as the
company statements."

When you hear stuff like this you've got to wonder what will happen
NEXT?

The title of this message reminded me of something. Has anybody seen the
Apple Desktop Media Video that apple's been giving away? In it, apple
comes right out and says, "WE INVENTED MULTIMEDIA PRESENTATIONS" (not direct
quote, but close enough.
Bull%$&$%. They were the first ones to ADVERTISE IT.
I'd really like to see somebody with a genlock and a flair for animation
get a copy of that video and "edit" it..... (a HAM jet fighter swoops down
out of the sky and fires a round of explosive boing-balls at the helocar,
destroyibg it in a full-color, stereo explosion)....
