[comp.sys.amiga] .GIF or .MAC to IFF

schur@venera.isi.edu (Sean Schur) (10/16/89)

Does anyone know how I can transfer .GIF or .MAC pictures into a format that
can be viewed on the Amiga? Or alternately a program that will show those
formats on an Amiga.

Thanks in advance.

Our last users group disk was a series of pictures translated from
GIF format to something called SHAM (or sliced HAM). The viewer and
conversion programs should be on several BBS but if you really need them
I'll try to get them together and e-mail/post them.

I am looking for software that will convert IFF to MAC type format and
vice versa. Could anyone please tell me where to find it?
E-Mail,please.

AmigaArts Forum on CompuServe has software to do all of these. AMGIF can
transfer the GIF pictures to IFF. We also have HAMGIF and VERTGIF. More
recently, we have SHAMVIEW which converts GIF pictures to "sliced ham",
and then displays them in very high resolution. SHAMVIEW has been released
in two or three versions that are not totally compatible, so if you use it,
be sure to get the viewer in the same version as the picture you want to
show.

What exactly is this "sliced HAM" format, anyway?

"Sliced HAM" (or, "SHAM") is a trick used on a HAM-mode screen to give the
illusion of better pictures. In a normal HAM picture, the palette of 4,096
colors is set, and then a single register (R, G, or B) is changed from one
horizontal pixel to the next.

SHAM pictures modify the palette to a NEW 4,096 colors for every scan line,
so colors from one scan line to the next have a larger variety of colors
to choose from.

To be honest, I can't see much difference between SHAM and HAM pictures, but
as long as there are pictures in any format that I want to view, I'll keep
getting the viewers for 'em.

Sure do... I use a program called gif2iff. It works fine and I got the file off
of a local area bbs here in Huntsville, Al. There is also one that converts from
IFF to GIF (iff2gif)....CHECK YOUR LOCAL BBS systems!!!

If you don't have an account at C$erve or don't want to spend the bucks online
there, you can also find all the above mentioned files (it's VIRTGIF) on my
system in it's Data Library. The name is Pro-Graphics and the number is
listed below in my signature. Up to 2400 bps.
