I've read a lot on this news group about the new Amiga ads, and it seems there are a lot of complaints about commodore not promoting the amiga as a serious computer, or not going into detail on some of the system features. it seems some of us ( being that most of us do work in the electronics field) forget that the average consumer who is going to fork out $$ on a computer doesn't know or care if a computer runs at 1 Mhz or 30 Mhz. if its multi-tasking or not. What they care about is glitz first (mostly) and raw performance later. If commodore was pushing for the high tech (yeck, I hate that word) market they wouldn't sell enough systems to make a growing profit and hence would stagnate. The business market is just to hard to break into. No, what will sell commodore hardware in large amounts is the "NEAT" factor ( gee look at all the neat'o things this system can do at home for you) and yes that includes game playing. Jo-bob consumer will be turned off if you go into "raw" system details on these ads. and if you tell him that this system is for the degree laden engineer geek :^) who wants a serious computer system to do flow dynamics mapping he will not even give amiga a second thought. You have to promote the system as a "FUN" computer, thats easy to use, to hook them, and reel them in with the performance in the dealers place of business. BTW. I don't have an amiga, I have an ST, and I think the new ads are great compared with what Atari has (nada). And lets face it, for now, Commodore is not competing with Apple or IBM, they are competing with Atari. If nintendo comes out with a "REAL" computer both Atari and Commodore are in BIG trouble, think about it. Also on a side note, Don't judge all us ST users on the few A**holes who are trying to start another war on "my system is better then your system" crap. Each system has its own pluses and minuses. Atari's big minus(to me) is the Tremails (sp?) and lack of multi-tasking, which is why I will NOT buy the TT. -- uucp: mcnc!rti!sunpix!steve or mcnc!rti!sunpix!allegro |Stephen McKay Matson "FRODO LIVES!!" Not for a minute. Nintendo used a few tricks to establish their game machine. First of all, they got it firmly established in Japan years before they started selling in the US or Europe. Next, they made it impossible, or nearly so, for any company to sell a Nintendo game without going through Nintendo, and they put severe restrictions on how many copies of a game could be made and how much profit any 3rd party could make on a game. The end results are that there aren't any of the junk games that helped kill the Atari machines, and more importantly, Nintendo gets a piece of every game cartridge sold. Ever since the Atari 2600 it's been obvious that you don't make money on the console, you make it on the cartridge. The personal computer market is quite different. Nintendo doesn't have a home market, or any market, with no competition in order to get a head start. Folks who write programs for real computers are used to being able to set their own prices and sell as many as possible. If they're the only game in town, you have to do what Nintendo says. If they're one among many, you can tell them "G'day" and sell products for a machine that'll make _you_ more profit, as a third party. > uucp: mcnc!rti!sunpix!steve or mcnc!rti!sunpix!allegro |Stephen McKay Matson -- Dave Haynie Commodore-Amiga (Systems Engineering) "The Crew That Never Rests" {uunet|pyramid|rutgers}!cbmvax!daveh PLINK: hazy BIX: hazy Too much of everything is just enough
