I am looking for some advice on good educational software for 3 or 4 year
olds. Either public domain (f. fish) or commercial. Thanks.

I recommend ABZOO. This program encourages preschoolers to
write and read by presenting them with pictures of animals
with their names at 3 different levels of difficulty. At the
lowest level a keyboard is put up on the screen and the
child hits any key and an animal whose name starts with that
letter is shown, the talker says his name and then the keyboard
is presented with that key missing. At the highest level
the animal and his name is shown then is blanked and as the
child types the name in a portion of the animal is reshown.

My kids have gotten much enjoyment from this program and I
expect they will for some years to come. I suspect most kids
would enjoy it between the ages of 2-6.

On the other hand I would avoid the BYTE BY BYTE Programs.
They are not good neighbors with other programs you might
want to run and we end up having to reboot everytime we use
those. The ideas in the BYTE BY BYTE programs seem appealing
to us adults but they just havent held my kids attention for
so long. They may be aimed at older kids that have learned to
use the mouse effectively perhaps. But then I would think that
a child that knows how to use a mouse effectively would already
be bored with the concepts of square vs circle or small vs bigger
or coloring a dinosaur tail red and his head yellow.

.

will enjoy it f

Back in mid-August I asked much the same question, and collected responses
from several people. "Software for Kids" was in the header, if memory
serves. One person even volunteered to start a 'kidsware' mailing list,
but I haven't heard anything further from him or anyone else regarding it.

Fred, Aswath, (anyone else?) drop me a line and I'll send you the info I
received. If I get more than, say, ten requests, I'll summarize and repost.
The address below seems reliable.

Sorry to post this, but email bounced (mailer couldn't find Portal
from Palo Alto!?!?!?)

Anyway, I too would appreciate a summary of the educational software
for preschoolers.

Er, I guess you were looking for me, I promised a mailing or posting
some time ago. (BTW, hmmm, that's some mailer, eh?)

With you, Mike, I've gotten over a dozen requests for this stuff. I
plead a combination of busy-ness and laziness, and I'll definitely get
it out over the weekend. Thanks for the reminder.

To others that are patiently waiting: thanks for being patient!
