[comp.sys.amiga] 68010/Amiga 1000

Hi Norm!

I received your letter about regarding the 68010.

I received a lot of mail about it. First of all, it is pin-compatible
so you can just drop it in. One of the major differences between the 68000
and the 10 is that the 10 has a three-instruction cache. The Amiga OS will
usually take care of this so programs will use it. Many incompatibilties
with programs that don't use it properly can be used with the program
decigel which fixes most of the incompatibilities (also used to patch
programs so they can run on the 68020 and the 68030).

I've heard that the compatibility is very good except for many games. Since
the 68010 carries the same instruction set as the 68020, if a program runs on
the 68020 (Amiga 2500), then it should run on the 68010.

The overall speed increase is about 7-15% although some programs that require
hardware math will speed up almost 30%. Overall, if you don't have many games
and would like a small increase in speed, the 68010 is worth it if you can get
one for less than $15. Otherwise, don't bother and get an Amiga with a 68020
or 68030 with a 68000 fallback mode for games.

By the way, your Amiga 1000 is officially not supported anymore. That means
you won't get a new kickstart disk although you can buy the new workbench 1.4
when it comes out. The new Extended Chip Set will not work with the 1000 either
although if you really want to hang on to it, a third party supplier will sell
a whole new motherboard that will support the 1000 for $700. This motherboard
will also include a video slot compatible with that of the 2000.

Send any comments you have!!

See ya!

Says WHO? Where do these rumors come from? I've seen an early version
of 1.4 on an A1000. Will everyone please stop saying that 1.4 won't work
on an A1000?!?!?!

Thank you.
