[comp.sys.amiga] The CMInet multiport board

kherron@ms.uky.edu (Kenneth Herron) (10/16/89)

Does anyone have any experience with the new CMInet multiport board?
It claims to have a serial port, a parallel port, an RS-422 port with
Apple-style connector, and an optional SCSI interface.

I have an A1000 with a memory board that doesn't pass the bus.
I am mostly interested in:

1) The bus-passing ability, or lack thereof, of this board.
2) The SCSI interface. Is it available yet? If so, how much? If
not, when? How well does/will it perform?

Any replies would be appreciated. If you mail them to me, I'll
summarize and post.

Does the SCSI port support the SCSI Direct protocol?

I have one... It does have all of those ports!

Currently, you'll need a ZORRO-II expansion box also. The 1000
version isn't out yet. Last I heard from CMI, they were doing a stripped
down verison for the 500 (Appletalk only) followed by a full featured
version for the 500 (Adds memory connector to 2000 version) and only then
the 1000 version.

I'd suppose by now that the appletalk software should be fairly complete...
Does it include, or is there available, TCP-IP over appletalk??
Telnet and FTP would be excellent!, especially in a multitasking environment.

I don't believe that scsidev.h is supported in the first software
release... I know Rich was planning on doing support, but I doubt if it
got out in the first release. I don't know for sure though.

I have seen the CMI board mentioned several times here on the net but have
yet to find any other information on it elsewhere.

At present I have a requirement for a multiport board for my own use and a
friend would like to network multiple A500s with an A2000 acting as a file
server (at work no less!).

Could somebody with more information about the CMI board and the appletalk
network etc. drop me a message with some details or and address/phone number
for the company that makes these?

Also if anybody also has information on other serial boards etc I would
like to hear about them also.

Thanks!

I talked with the CMI people at the AmiExpo show, it does not currently
support SCSI direct yet. All efforts are currently directed towards the
Appletalk bus support. They hope to add it in the near future.

A damn shame, I had cash in pocket, but it does not solve my tape backup
needs yet.

I purchased a CMI Multi-Port board at Chicago Ami-Expo (July 89). I have
had problems with the status bits on the serial port and was told by
CMI that there was a newer release of the drivers that would take care
of the problem. CMI promised to ship the latest version of the software
drivers. Unfortunately, I never received any package. Three additional
calls to CMI have produced no results. Now I have found that CMI's
phone has been disconnected. I checked this with directory assistance
who confirmed that CMI no longer has a working phone in Tualatin, OR.
Is CMI out of business? Does anyone have a copy of the newer drivers
that I could obtain? Is CMI-Net history? HELP!!!

I got a second version for mine from them... The cmiser.device
I have is 4332 bytes. Is this the one you have, or a newer one?

I talked to a CMI spokesman yesterday... He said that there would
be an announcement `maybe by friday' (11/10/89) as to the status of the
new company. It sounded very much like they'll be back in full swing,
but with their belts tightened...
