[comp.sys.amiga] NEED GENERAL AMIGA INFO -- PLEASE READ

cuddihy@sybil.cs.Buffalo.EDU (Elisabeth Cuddihy) (11/09/89)

I am about to purchase a new computer system. All I know about the
Amiga is through word of mouth. Please, PLEASE flood my mail box
after reading the rest of this post!

=========================================================================

WHERE I AM COMING FROM: I am a long time ibm/xt (yes, yuck) user and I am
also a unix and c fanatic. The only windowing system I have ever used
is X windows on a Sun workstation.

WHERE I AM GOING: I want a system that can my new needs in graphics and
the Mac looks over priced.

WHAT I NEED FROM YOU PEOPLE :-) (help!)

I am going to be doing video work. I will be
	a) creating computer animation and putting it on video tape
	b) taking video, feeding it into the computer to play with
it and putting it back on the tape.
I honestly don't know much about video although I do know some things about
computer animation.

I guess I could spend about $2000-$3500 but I don't want to go over board.
(I can always add on later $-) Also, I am a firm believer in shareware
and freeware.

I am having a LOT of trouble finding info on the Amiga and I have NO
idea where they are sold. I need to know:

* What are the different agima systems and what would be best for my needs?
* What software is available for my needs and, if freeware, where?

Elizabeth,
I'm sure there are a lot of people out there that would love to see
a summary of the responses you get. I for one am interested in this area,
although initially only on a hobby basis. Perhaps you could produce a little
article -
'An intro to animation and video on the Amiga for the NET, by the NET.'
What do you (and anyone else) think?

Firstly, I think that, for the money, the choice of computer will be easy.
(Say no more!) The peripheral equipment choice though will be very hard though.
I know its not the sort of response people like to see, but really you should
get out there and 'try before you buy'. (Sorry, I cant point you in the
direction of a good dealer, unless your coming over here soon of course!).
Spend some time trying out equipment, find out how easy it is (or isnt!) to
use, hire out some equipment for a weekend, just get some 'hands on'.

Perhaps your shopping list will look like this:

	1/ Amiga 2000 2+ Meg, Hard disk.
2/ Genlock (of sorts) - Syncronises amiga TV signal to second source.
	(could be another video).
3/ Framegrabber. - Grabs and stores a frame from a video source.
(There are genlock/grabber combinations on the market, I saw one for
just over 500 UK pounds the other day)
4/ video recorder. (Dont know much about this i'm afraid.)
5/ graphics software. (HAM mode compatable - HAM is the resolution mode
most often used for video work.)

Prices will depend on quality required and will vary considerably
(Pro quality may cost 5 or 6 times that of 'hobby satisfaction' quality.)
and besides, I havent a clue what anything costs in your part of the world.

Anyway, theres my contribution. If I find/read anything interesting I wont
hesitate to mail the info to you. Oh and by the way, please consider posting
a summary.

P.S.
Sean Schur (schur@edu.isi.venera) is a helpful chap, and someone who uses amiga's on a proffesional basis. He will certainly be able to give you
some technical details/prices/guidlines etc.

	GOOD LUCK - Steve.
