[comp.sys.amiga] other than chessmaster?

hargitai@acf5.NYU.EDU (11/10/89)

are there other chess games besides chessmaster for the Amiga?

Well, there's Battle Chess, but if you want a pure no-frills chess game,
then Chessmaster is probably not for you.

Maybe someone will port Deep Thought for Amy...

Yes, there is a game called BattleChess. I don't know
who sells it (a gift to me).
It plays a good game, 7 levels + timed play. Supports 2D and 3D
modes. In the 3D mode, you get a very well done animation+sound
of pieces moveing and killed each other. I spent a couple
of hours when I first got the game simply setting up games
to watch how each piece killed other pieces.

It has the "enter this info" from the manual copy protection.
I tried AmigaDOS backup on the disk once, but the copy
did not work correctly.
I think they have simple messed with the block free bitmap, nothing
very complex.

Battle Chess makes excellent use of Amiga sound and animation.
However, I understand that some other programs are better at
playing the game.

The answer to your question is yes! There is a great chess game called
BATTLE CHESS.

I have "BattleChess" by Interplay. It gives me a pretty good game of
Chess (okay, I'm no expert!) on the lower levels.

More impressive is the graphics and sounds that are "packed" into it.
It has a 3-D setting with animated characters (with an option for 2-D for
more clarity and the "standard" look from above).

It's a great game to show off the Amiga with.
Plus, it uses the "type a word from the manual" (TAWFTM) protection
scheme so you don't have to use your master disks all the time.

YES! My favorite is BATTLE CHESS from Interplay. It plays a pretty good game
of chess. (I'm certainly not a master) Also it has the attraction of allowing
you to watch the battle between the pieces. They will fight right there on the
board. Watch for the king to take the queen and also the rook to take queen.
Both of these moves are quite halarious. It also plays itself and allows you to
pick famous matches for it to play. It also supports play over the modem.

IMHO, one important thing to look for in a chess program for the Amiga is
the ability to multi-task. I bought the original version of Chessmaster for
the Amiga and it took over the machine. This is just terrible, a game could
last for days at the most competitive levels between work, school, and other
computing, and all the subsequent saving of position and rebooting sux!!
