[comp.sys.amiga] Amiga Laptop

GORRIEDE@UREGINA1.BITNET (Dennis Robert Gorrie) (11/10/89)

I just finished reading a review of the new Mac Portable.

Scary Stuff. Niffty. Which brings me to the question, will
is Commodore remotely considering an Amiga Laptop?

We already know there is going to be an A3000, thats old news.
What is in the works for future Amiga product lines? Laptops?
Any significant changes to A500's or A2000's?

I just attended a hands-on demo of the Mac Portable and I was really impressed.
Aside from the weight (18 lbs. w/40 mb HD & 1mb RAM), and the cost ($6500) it
looks like the best engineered laptop I've seen.

Commodore has to figure out how to sell the desktop first. I would prefer they
put the $$$$ into R&D + Advertising than into a portable. Remember the SX-64 ?

I hope you all find this as highly entertaining as I did...

In case you didn't catch it first time around, let me paraphrase:
I just saw the new Mac Portable.
Besides the fact that it isn't very portable, and isn't
at all affordable, it looks like the best thing around...

Sure, and the Cray II is a great portable except it's a bit overweight, and
a little on the costly side...

:) [many of these] are implied, of course... Tongue is firmly in cheek, no
flames please.. :)

I think Commodore's finances are a little strained... I'd rather see a 32
bit machine than a portable, these things must have a priority, you know...
:) :) :)

OK - maybe I should rephrase, it's the best engineered "luggable" I've seen. The
active matrix screen and the usability of the trackball were what sparked my
interest. As for price - that has nothing to do with engineering as far as I'm
concerned - I'll give 'em credit no matter what $$$ the "suits" tagged on it.
You can take the battery out while the machine is running and it will
stay up for a short time.

By the way, anyone remember the Commodore LCD ? Ran on AA batteries if I
remember right. I think had BASIC in ROM, and a 40 x 18(?) screen.
I've actually got a picture of it along with a "fact-filled" article.

Yes. They are still hot items in some areas. They can be sold for as much
as $400-500 in some cases. Except for the kludgy screen, the SX-64 was
a nice box. We've used it a number of times on remote broadcasts where we
need studio-control room communication.
