My group is looking at "small" 32-bit machines
to be used for general computing (C and F77)
as well as functioning as a "LSI-CAD" Graphics System.
We are considering the HP9000, the VAX 11/730 and the
Perkin-Elmer 3210 all with UN*X.
QUESTION:
Does anybody out there have any comments (good/bad/other)
about the P-E system? How good is their UN*X? The
support? Reliability? Network capability? HP/GPIB-able?
Are any of you reading this while logged on to a
P-E 3210?
Specifically we are looking toward the 3210 with 4MB
of "core" (lovely anachronism, don't you think?), a 96MB
disc (more later) and perhaps a floating point processor.
Without the FPP we're looking at ~$65K (includes a console).
********Does the lack of "Virtual Memory" pose a problem?
(VM isn't specifically mentioned in the literature,
if they had it, I think they'd have mentioned it.)
