How about just running DCRON or AMYCRON and have it set up to reset your
clock before the error gets too bad? Not very elegant, but the price is
right. These two programs allow you to set up a schedule of various
tasks that need to be run at periodic intervals. These programs are
available on better BBSs around the country.

Sounds like line noise to me. Options are to redial and hope for a
better line, clean up the connections around your house, or buy a modem
with built-in error correction and only call boards that support it.
(the last option is NOT inexpensive!)

The trashcan is a directory on the disk. Since the workbench screen is
showing you all the storage devices you have on your system, there's no
way for it to denote which device the trashcan is associated with. Once
you open a window from a disk, the trashcan (if it exists) is shown for
that disk.
