rmfile is here The highly-interactive program which allows one to rename or remove odd files (by number) is here. It doesn't care if the filename has control characters. It doesn't care if the most significant bit is set. It shows (for those who are interested) what the characters are with the ^ convention (control - A is shown as ^A, rubout is ^?). If a significant number of sites install this prog, and the manual page, which have just been submitted to net.sources, then the every-6-month flames about how to delete/rename these files should go away. My hope is that if a nicely written prog is available (not a dsw kludge; console switches! Give me a break!), and documented (again, refer to the UNIX manuals on dsw), that people won't have to ask the net about how to do these things. Pessimistically: three quarters of all sites won't install it (or anything like it), it will be submitted multiple times (every three to six months), and even at sites that have it installed (and documented) there will be someone who would rather ask net.general than his local guru (if any) or consult the online documentation (if any). Hind-sight will confirm this prediction. Stephen Uitti at Purdue Physics ...pur-ee!physics:suitti ...pur-ee!pur-phy!suitti
