[comp.sys.amiga] ST506 i/f for AMIGA?

stevep@galadriel.bt.co.uk (Steve Paine) (12/07/89)

I know there's always SCSI post flying about but I need some info about
the ST-506 i/f, I think!
Firstly, does anyone know anything about a Seagate ST-412 drive? I
think it is a 10Meg pre-SCSI hard drive with the ST506 serial i/f. Would it
be worth me getting an interface for the AMIGA if I could get the drive
very cheap (free!). And can anyone give me info on interfaces available/price?

	Many thanks.

	Steve Paine.

If you go with an st-506 interface I highly recommend you AVOID the Spirit
interface. I have one and it works great. HOWEVER, it took 2 and 1/2 months of
sending various pieces back and forth to the company to get it working. I also
know two other owners in the San Diego area who had to send their's back at
least once. The qualiaty control seems to be lacking.

Also, every time I sent the unit to Spirit I got a promise of "It will be
looked at the SECOND it gets in." It then sat around for a LONG time before
they got around to cheking it out.

I know one user of the ALF2 in San Diego. It worked first time, every time.

I have 2 Seagate 412's connected to a CBM 2090A. They have worked flawlessly
for the past year. They are in an external box with a separate power supply
and about 3' of ribbon cable. They were the right price also (free).
The 2090A handles 2 ST506 drives (and 6 SCSI's). Someday i will get a
SCSI drive that will fit inside my 2000.

If i were you, hold on for a bit and people should be selling their 2090A's
so they can upgrade to the new 2091. I know the 2090A has some problems, but
none of them are serious enough not to consider one at a good price.
